Design an Awesome and Unique Vtuber Avatar

Every virtual YouTuber has to have an avatar. There are two types of avatars – 2D and 3D. The costs of designing a character can range from $0 to a few hundred dollars. If you are artistically inclined, don’t hesitate to create one yourself! Be aware that it may be a challenging task, especially if you want your character to be a full body, not just the face.

However, if you don’t want to spend dozens of hours on the process, you can always hire an artist to do it for you, especially if you don’t have any previous experience. It’s a popular choice among other vtubers.

When it comes to vtuber model styles, most popular vtubers prefer characters similar to video game characters or anime-style avatars. You can always search for inspiration on social media, websites like Pinterest, or DeviantArt.

Pros and cons of 2D and 3D avatars

Motion Capture Your Vtuber Model

Motion capture (a technique that allows the camera to record your movement and create an animation of your entire body) allows your avatar to copy facial expressions and movement. To do this, you will again need to hire external services (and spend even a thousand dollars) or do everything by yourself.

If you decide on the latter option, watch some YouTube tutorials on how to do it best, and decide on the most comfortable software for you. There is a myriad of options from free to premium paid ones.

Notable vtuber software for motion capture:

  • VRoid Studio (Free)
  • FaceRig
  • Wakaru (Free)
  • Luppet
  • Vtube Studio (Free)

Important note: The higher quality of your vtube model and animation (hand tracking, facial movements, etc.), the more interested your audience will be.

Invest in a High Spec Computer

A good PC is the most essential piece of any vtuber setup. Creating real-time live stream animations is not an easy job for your hardware. So be sure to invest more than triple digits to make sure your models run smoothly and maintain an excellent experience for your audience. Also – the same case applies to any streaming software.

If you already have a good PC, you can always use search engines like Google to test to see if your hardware will be enough to keep up with all that soft and streaming video with animation overlays.

Find the Best Vtuber Streaming Setup

While buying a green screen for a background is an easy job, choosing the right motion-tracking webcam or microphone requires some time.

Webcam

Many live-streaming vtubers decide to buy DSLR cameras, but can be costly for a beginner’s budget. Tbh, almost every high-quality new webcam with good resolution should handle basic facial tracking. The minimum requirements for the camera are 720p, but the best value for money will be 1080p.

You should invest in a tracking suit if you want your full body to be visible on your stream. We recommend starting with a simple camera, then advancing to more complex gadgets.

Vtuber Microphone

The catch with live broadcast is that everything is going live to your viewers as is. There is no editing later so background noise can be heard instantly. And that’s just not good.

A quality mic will help you reduce noise and allow you to change your voice in voiceover software without quality loss. Contrary to some beliefs, it makes no difference for lip-syncing if you use a headset, booth, or stand-alone mic, as long as it’s a quality one. Choose the one you will feel the most comfortable with. Some streamers prefer to have something on their head, while others wouldn’t stand having a mic directly in front of their lips.

Green Screen

Many vtubers use a green screen in the background to change their room walls to something more suitable for their avatar. For example, a Japanese-inspired room or garden will be perfect for an anime-looking avatar.

The only thing you must check before buying a green screen is its width and length. To make sure the screen will cover everything in your sight, you can take some fabric and hang it on some freestanding clothing racks. Then, go to your streaming station and move the camera to the sides and see if the fabric covers every inch of the room. If yes – just measure how much of it you will need.
